Who was John O'Groats.....

A mound near the John O'Groats House Hotel marks the site where Jan de Groot, a Dutchman, built his famous house in the reign of James IV(1488 - 1513). His seven descendants quarrelled about precedence and Jan de Groot solved this problem by building an octagonal house with eight doors, one for each of his seven sons and himself, and an eight sided table so that no one occupied the head of the table. Jan de Groot ran a ferry to Orkney and charged 2p a trip. The coin for this denomination became known as the 'groat'. Jan de Groot is buried in Canisbay churchyard where his tombstone can be seen, now moved to inside the entrance porch for protection against the weather. Over a period of time the name Jan de Groot has subsequently changed to John O'Groats.

Prepared..

Finished on working out the route which we will be using this year for our attempt to cycle the Jogle. Slightly different in stages from 2011 as this will give us the opportunity to see new places and scenery. We will use B&B accommodation along the way. That too has been prepared as far as we can :) still a juggle as we can't say for sure where we will stop due to weather etc. We have prepared a list of accommodation along the way we can choose from. Getting excited for our next adventure and also trying to get fit! In addition to going out on the tandem I still train indoors on my single bike and Lionel goes out on his single bike. The date we will be leaving has been set for May 15th when we travel from Reedham to Dingwall, stay the night there and travel the following day to East Mey, where our tandem will be waiting for us. After all the trouble and frustration with British rail in getting reservations for the tandem we have now called in the service of a Bike courier, who appears to be extremely efficient! ( And so they were, excellent service!)

J.O.G. - Bettyhill - Tongue - Altnaharra - Lairg - Dingwall - Inverness - Fort William - Connell - Ardlui - Glasgow - Abington - Lockerbie - Carlisle -Penrith - Milnthorpe - Eccleston - Frodsham - Wem - Shrewsbury - Leominster - Hereford - Chepstow - Easton-in-Gordano - Bridgwater - Sampford Peverel - Okehampton - Lostwithiel - Carnon Downs - LAND'S END.
